How to Make a Reese Bass for DnB and Neurofunk

The Reese bass is the backbone of DnB and neurofunk. Named after the detuned sound Kevin Saunderson built in the late eighties, it is now the foundation under thousands of rolling, snarling basslines. The recipe sounds simple: take two sawtooth oscillators, detune them against each other, and you get that thick, beating, metallic growl. In practice the magic is in the movement and the filtering. This guide walks through building a Reese from scratch in a wavetable bass synthesizer plugin, then automating it until it rolls the way a proper neurofunk bass should.

What Actually Makes a Reese Bass Move

A Reese is built on phase cancellation. When two identical sawtooth waves sit slightly out of tune, their peaks drift in and out of alignment, and that constant reinforcing and cancelling is what creates the slow, beating wobble you hear before any LFO is even involved. The wider the detune, the faster and more aggressive the beating. That is the raw ingredient. Everything else, the filtering, the distortion and the modulation, is there to sculpt that beating into something musical and aggressive enough to cut through a DnB mix.

Understanding this matters because it tells you where the character lives. If your Reese sounds thin or static, the problem is almost always the detune relationship and the filter, not the effects you bolt on afterwards.

Step One: Two Detuned Sawtooth Oscillators

Open the TRYKZ SYNTHESISER and load a sawtooth, or a saw-like wavetable, onto oscillator one. Copy the same waveform onto oscillator two. Now detune oscillator two against oscillator one. A small amount, around 10 to 20 cents, gives a slow, classic roll. Push it wider towards a quarter or half a semitone and the beating gets faster and more metallic, which is the neurofunk territory you want for a more aggressive track. Keep both oscillators at the same octave so the fundamental stays strong.

Use Unison to Thicken the Detune

For an even denser Reese, add a few voices of unison and spread the detune across them. This stacks several slightly out of tune copies of each oscillator, multiplying the beating into a wall of moving harmonics. Be careful with the spread. Too much unison detune turns a focused growl into a blurry mush, so add it gradually and stop the moment the low end starts to lose its weight.

Step Two: Choose the Right Wavetable

A pure sawtooth is the traditional starting point, but a wavetable bass synthesizer plugin gives you far more reach. Swap one of the sawtooth oscillators for a harmonically richer wavetable and you instantly change the flavour of the snarl. Tables with strong upper harmonics give a brighter, more vocal Reese that suits neurofunk, while smoother tables keep things rounder for liquid and rolling DnB. Try scanning slowly through the wavetable position to hear how the harmonic content shifts, then park it where the growl feels most alive.

This is where the deeper wavetables pay off. The same detuned skeleton can become a dozen different basses just by changing which tables sit on the two oscillators and where you set the scan position.

Step Three: Anchor the Low End With a Sub

The detuned oscillators carry the character, but their phase cancellation also eats into the low end, which is exactly why a raw Reese can feel weak on a club system. Bring in the third oscillator as a clean sine sub, set one octave below and kept dead centre and perfectly in tune. This sub does not move or detune. Its only job is to sit underneath the snarl and hold the weight, so the beating happens in the mids and highs while the foundation stays rock solid in mono.

Step Four: Add the Movement With the Modulation Matrix

A static Reese is a starting point, not a finished bass. The drag-and-drop modulation matrix is where it comes to life, and a few well chosen routings cover almost every DnB and neurofunk bass you will ever build.

First, route a tempo-synced LFO to the filter cutoff for the rolling motion that defines a DnB Reese. A slow triangle or sine LFO synced to a quarter or eighth note gives that breathing, rolling movement. Second, route a second LFO to oscillator detune or pitch with a tiny depth, so the beating itself shifts subtly over time and never sounds looped. Third, route an envelope to the filter cutoff so each note opens with a bit of attack before settling. Fourth, route velocity to cutoff so harder hits open brighter, giving your bassline natural dynamics instead of a flat, machine-gun wall.

A Reese is not a single sound, it is a relationship. Two oscillators fighting each other, a filter shaping the fight, and modulation keeping it alive. Get those three talking and the bass writes itself.

Step Five: Filter Automation and Tone

Bass character is filter character. Route everything except the sub into the hands-on filter section and start with a low-pass. Pull the cutoff down so the harsh top end is tamed, then push the resonance up until the filter starts to emphasise the harmonics right around the cutoff point. That resonant emphasis is what gives the Reese its snarl. Now automate the cutoff by hand across the length of a phrase, opening it on the build and closing it on the drop, so the bass tells a story rather than droning at one tone for sixteen bars.

For neurofunk especially, try a band-pass or a high-pass in series with the low-pass to hollow out the middle and exaggerate that nasal, talking quality. Small cutoff movements make a huge difference here, so automate in detail.

Step Six: Distortion, Layering and Processing

The final stage is grit. A touch of distortion or waveshaping pushed before or after the filter adds the harmonics that let a Reese survive on phone speakers and big rigs alike. Go gently, because too much distortion collapses the stereo beating into a flat fizz. Many producers split the bass into bands at this stage, distorting only the mids and highs while leaving the sub clean, which keeps the low end tight and powerful. Run the whole thing in mono while you dial in the drive, because anything that vanishes in mono will vanish on a club system too.
